Broadcast journalism students from the Northern Television Center have claimed Second Prize honors this year from the Illinois News Broadcasters Association annual collegiate competition. They won in the category of Outstanding Sports Television Program for our already award-winning "Top Shelf Sports" program. The award was presented Saturday evening at INBA's spring conference in Champaign. Eleven people from the Journalism program attended. All of Illinois' major universities participate and submit entries in this annual competition.

Since "Top Shelf Sports" was launched in 2005, it has received recognition consistently from professional organizations. The programs alums have made a strong impression in local television. Matt Knutson, the program's creator, is a producer for Metromix on CLTV in Chicago. Mike Morig and Pat Gostele are now Sports Directors for, respectively, WREX-TV and WIFR-TV in Rockford.
