For some of the top aspiring journalists at NIU, it's worth pursuing highly regarded intern slots at places like the Aurora Beacon News, the Elgin Courier, The Daily Herald, even the Chicago Tribune and Sun-Times, as well as positions at television and radio stations in Northern Illinois. These internships can jumpstart a career.
To compete for spots at these larger, highly regarded news organizations, students must have a sampling of polished clips or video/audio work.
Students who believe they might qualify for these competitive spots can contact Dirk Johnson at dejohnson(at)niu.edu. Johnson is a former bureau chief at The New York Times and Newsweek, as well as a former intern at the Sun-Times and the Milwaukee Journal.
