Undergraduate Programs in Communication Studies & Journalism
The need for communication skills has never been more critical in many professions. Employers consistently cite communication skills as the major requirement for success. A major in communication studies can help you acquire and learn to use those skills effectively. Students of communication studies learn to analyze written, oral, visual and electronic messages from historical, critical and social science perspectives. They also learn to produce such messages as a means of artistic and functional expression.
So come to NIU and learn how to tell the stories!
We offer programs for both B.A. and B.S. degrees in communication studies and in journalism.
As a communication studies major, you can focus on a single emphasis or pursue a combination of the following emphases: rhetoric and public communication and media studies or media studies and organizational/corporate communication. You may pursue a double major in communication and journalism.
Some of our lower-division courses can be taken by non-majors toward the university's general education program and interdisciplinary minors such as global studies, LGBT studies, and women's and gender studies.
