Our Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Communication is to offer quality education at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in a variety of specialties within the communication and journalism disciplines, in addition to maintaining a faculty internationally-renowned for research and professional accomplishments.

What We Offer

The Department of Communication offers a B.A. or B.S. in both Communication Studies and Journalism as well as an M.A. in Communication Studies.  Our degree programs insure a broad study of the field of communication while providing students an opportunity to focus on a chosen area of emphasis.  Through engaged-learning curricula, our programs prepare a diverse spectrum of students to enter a wide range of professions in communication, journalism, and related fields.

The Communication Studies undergraduate program offers major emphases in Rhetoric and Public Communication, Media Studies, and Organizational/Corporate Communication. The Journalism undergraduate program provides coursework in print/online journalism, broadcast journalism, media convergence, and public relations. Students in both undergraduate degree programs can select from an innovative array of courses that allows them to specialize in their area(s) of interest. The Undergraduate Program Advisor is available for consultation about selection of courses and degree requirements.

The M.A. in Communication Studies has a long and distinguished history and an outstanding reputation.  We provide a broad-based program of advanced study in communication that includes the areas of interpersonal, organizational, and persuasive communication; journalism; media studies; and rhetorical studies. The M.A. curriculum is designed to contribute to the intellectual development of students by providing historical and analytical insights into the structure, functions, processes, and significance of communication in social, economic, political, and professional relationships.

Students in all degree programs study with distinguished faculty who excel in teaching, research, artistry, and engagement. The Department has fully updated labs available to all majors to support student research and artistry. Each student has access to personalized advising, one-on-one faculty mentorship, and numerous engaged-learning opportunities.
